OAK: Brett Anderson LHP (5-8, 4.32, 94 ERA+)
BOS: Brad Penny RHP (7-4, 4.71, 99 ERA+)
I wonder if they'll get this game in. New England's starting to fill up with rain.
Allan and Laura will be at this game so hopefully the rain holds off.
Remember Brett Anderson? No? That's because you don't want to. Anderson threw a complete game shutout against the Red Sox, at Fenway Park, on July 6th. Refreshing your memory: 9 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 9 K.
His last three starts went from good-but-not-long-enough, to great, to... Meh. 4 scoreless innings against Tampa Bay, 8 magnificant scoreless innings against the Angels (2 H, 0 BB, 6 K!), then 4 runs in 6 2/3 against the Yankees last time out.
We know Brad Penny doesn't venture too deep into games, but the innings he does pitch he pitches pretty well, especially for starting the season as the Number Five starter. His last time out against Baltimore he pitched into the 7th inning, giving up an unearned run as the Red Sox went on to win 3-1. He has not faced Oakland this year.
David Ortiz gets the night off. Mike Lowell will DH. J.D. Drew also gets the night off.
1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
4. Jason Bay, LF
5. Mike Lowell, DH
6. Rocco Baldelli, RF
7. Adam LaRoche, 1B
8. Jason Varitek, C
9. Jed Lowrie, SS
Yankees/Rays at 7:00 on ESPN. Joba/Garza
I'd like Garza to win but I want to see both their arms fall off by the end of the game. I'd also like to see that one go 38 innings.
Also: Tigers/Rangers at 8:00. Texas is 1.5 GB in the Wild Card. Verlander/Feldman.
***
Dun dun dun. The Phillies appear to have agreed to a trade for Cliff Lee. Does this matter to the Red Sox? Does it affect Toronto's leverage and demands for Roy Halladay? We'll see.
***
After 99 games in 2009 we're 58-41, 2.5 GB the Yankees.
After 99 games in 2008 we were 57-42, 1.5 GB the Rays.
After 99 games in WS winning 2007, we were 60-39, 7 games ahead of New York.
Think about that. Feels like the Red Sox haven't been very good this year, eh? They're only 2 games behind the 2007 Red Sox after 99. 2 games! See? It's not as bad as you think.

Hey , How was jos1, besides the outcome of the game....
I'll be at the gym for the beginning of the game but the thread is open for... threading.
It may not be as bad as we think, but in after the top of the first fuckin' inning here, and after last night, it seems...bad. It might not be as bad as it seems, but it does seem bad.
At least JoS'ers had an extraordinary game to watch.
Well I came by to say it was good meeting/seeing everybody last night. Nobody's around though....
Penny just gave up 5 in the effing first including a leadoff dong on pitch 1. What the crud?
You guys must have had a great time.
Maybe next year...
Lowell's HR...gives ya hope.
I mean, he's a fine as a DH!
Gamethreads outside of JoS are traditionally light. But the space is here and the link is over there.
Eck talks to invisible people!
Allan needs to start a new attended-game winning streak.
Did they say where they're sitting tonight?
I got home from the game at 3:00 this morning. Slept until 9, which was fine up until... right about now. I could use a nap.
"Back where it came from." Drink!
This team could use another All Star Break.
Fuck the fuckin A's
Wow, one of the few things holding this team up thet past few weeks has been the bullpen...
not any more.
I'm starting to think of giving Masterson, Papelbon, Buchholz and Penny and maybe a minor league prospect to the Jays for Haladay seems like a good deal.
We'll send Green, Lowrie, and Larry Luchhino to Toronto as well. Should be a blockbustah!
Man with one clock knows what time it is. Man with two is never sure.
Flyball with one man under it gets caught
Flyball with two men under it is never sure.
Ish... good point.
Come on Papi!!!
Papi magic is so rare now... :(
Seems like any magic is so rare. It only seems like it.
Hi, all. Whoever is here. This game sucks. What the hell is wrong with our team?
I have no idea. Please figure it out, Red Sox!
Can we score three runs in the ninth, or can only shitty teams do that?
Can they at least win this one game for Allan and Laura?
OK, a hit!
And there's another.
All right! Not dead yet.
It feels strange to watch this on TV after having been there last night.
Please avoid the golden sombrero, Yook.
Buggah!
Unfortunately, it feels a little reminiscent of last night. Ninth inning, coming close, but not necessarily close enough.
Uh oh.
Yes!!
Some late night meds from the dr!
Hey, a run.
Bleh.
FUCK
Nope. No wins for Allan and Laura.
Sparkling clean water.
That truly sucks. No wins for Laura and Allan, and three and half behind the Yankees.
I am pissed off.
At least there's the third Ashes test tomorrow, unless that gets rained out.
I don't know if I'm going to be around tomorrow for the game - My mother might have a procedure tomorrow and/or a doctor's appointment right smack dab in the middle of the day. But I will post a gamethread and open comments. I haven't had any problems with that yet.
