OAK: Gio Gonzalez RHP (2-2, 7.75 ERA, 53 ERA+)
BOS: Jon Lester LHP (9-7, 3.79 ERA, 123 ERA+)
Lester has had a good month of July, going 2-1 in four starts. In those four games he's given up 6 earned runs total, in 29 innings against Seattle, Kansas City, Toronto and Baltimore. Against Baltimore he went 7 1/3, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks and 9 K's.
Gonzalez is a different story. He's made five starts this season and has had a topsy-turvy month of July. He had a normal-looking 6 IP/2 ER effort at Cleveland on the 5th, then pitched an inning out of the bullpen in a 6-0 loss to Tampa Bay, giving up a run. He started against Minnesota and had his whole world rocked, giving up 11 runs in 2 2/3 innings. In New York he returned to a normal pitching effort with 6 2/3 of 1 run ball in a 6-2 win against the MFY.

Update, 1 PM: The New York Times has run a story where lawyers with knowledge of the results of the 2003 performance-enhancing drug tests of roughly 100 players in MLB have leaked Manny Ramírez and David Ortiz's names as among those who tested positive.
They did not name anyone else on that list today. For me that's more a part of the story than the actual story is. If names are going to be leaked, why not leak the whole thing? Why only leak these two names?

An early and insurmountable Sox lead would go a long ways towards keeping Allan and Laura from driving off the road in a fit of rage.
This is true. I'd hate for the Red Sox to be down when they go out of radio range.
TC just said on NESN that "Lawyers with knowledge" of the 2003 MLB doping PEDs list told the New York Times that Manny and Ortiz were on that list.
So according to these lawyers, Ortiz tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
What bothers me about the journalism aspect of this news article is it doesn't name anyone else. Nobody else on that list was named today. The only two were Manny and David.
You go to the NYtimes.com front page and it's front and center. I don't get why these were the only two names out of roughly 100 to come out. We know who the last five were that were named - Bonds, A-Rod, Sosa, Jason Grimsley and David Segui, but why no other names?
Oakland Oatmeal:
1. Adam Kennedy, 2B
2. Orlando Cabrera, SS
3. Nomar Garciaparra, DH
4. Jack Cust, RF
5. Tommy Everidge, 1B
6. Bobby Crosby, 3B
7. Rajai Davis, CF
8. Ryan Sweeney, LF
9. Landon Powell, C
Great day weatherwise it looks like, for Laura and Allan traveling back home.
Amy Nelson of ESPN tweeted: "Just got off phone with Torii Hunter ...said he was "shocked" about Ortiz, and that "this hurts. this really hurts..."
Because, you know. Since these couple of lawyers who don't have names said he doped, it must be totally true, right? I thought Torii Hunter was smarter than that.
More blather from Hunter:
"I don't know what to think about this. I guess you just never know what people do in the dark.
"I still love him but at the same time it's tough to hear that. I know it's going to be tough on him and tough on his family once this gets out. It's Big Papi, man, it's the Big Dog of Boston and he helped win two World Series with those guys, with the clutch hits. And now all those things are going to be tainted."

Ish, we can't have a doulble standard here, we didn't question when A-rod was on the list......To question Tori Hunter's smarts here seems a little wrong....More troubling is the fact that Ortiz came out against steriods pretty hard....
More Hunter:
"Whoever got that list is just playing with Major League Baseball right now. Either put [the list] away, or just put it out. It was anonymous and now the names are leaking and it's a joke.
"He's still my boy, no matter what. David is a great person and I love him to death. Nothing going to change between us. I'm just shocked just like everybody else, that's all."
I didn't totally believe A-Rod until he admitted it himself to Peter Gammons. All we know right now is a couple of lawyers say he's on a list.
I agree with you about the double standard. I think I did believe it a little more with A-Rod - maybe I just don't want to believe this until I have to.
Lester's got two good innings under his belt.
Bob Montgomery in the booth with DO today. He said Gonzalez got "knocked around a little bit" by the Twins.
11 runs.
Lyndon with the diving catch! Coming straight in, almost kissed FY's shoes.
Could have used more than one run out of that bases-loaded situation. Ortiz contributes a rice-and-beans half dong.
I suppose I would have to hear him admit it to be sure. But any fallout should be somewhat lessened by repetition. I also wish that list would either be released or disappear.
Why is it that we're hearing so much about what Hunter thinks? He happened to be in the middle of an interview when the news broke?
Pedroia's making me laugh today, the way he's playing.
Hunter is good friends with Ortiz and Amy K. Nelson of ESPN.com called him to talk to him about it.
4-1.
Jesus.
4-3. That's progress of a sort.
Maybe Papi can rice-and-beans one over the rightfield wall here.
Well center field certainly works too.
6-5.
Craig Breslow = embedded Sox.
Ha ha, Ben.
Papi's homer...the losses lately...Matsuzaka supposedly now claiming he didn't say that, er, stuff that was reported...the whirling trade deadline...roller coaster emotions all over.
Me...using fucking ellipses, which I detest...
It's sheer madness in RS Nation today. And it feels like the season hinges on our hanging on to win this freaking game.
I'm not saying that's reality. Just...seems like it.
Don't forget Pedroia's brother got sentenced for kiddy-humping.
7-5 on Drew/Tek doubles. A&L's moods are considerably lightened, I'm sure.
Really?
I thought someone on SoSH was kidding about that.
7-5. My aorta is able to dilate a little.
8-5. Whaddaya know, a three run lead going into the top of the 9th.
Sentence to eight years, six of them suspended. Still has to serve one year.
*sentenced. Maybe he served the other remaining year already pending trial.
Pedroia's comments about how shitty his home town were, earlier in the season, at the time seemed related to his brother's issues.
One out and a baserunner. Paps not doing anything to stay off anyone's shit list.
Hey look, he didn't hold the runner.
Ok, two outs.
Water. Finally.
Dirty enough for me.
Doesn't seem like the Yankees are that much worse than those Red Sox now, are they?
Steroids.....it was only a matter of time...you didn't think Papi did that naturally did you?
And to think...we only had Pettitte and Clemens juicing...they didn't plan everyday...yeah, Knoblauch too maybe but not Jeter, Posada, or Bernie.....
Shame on you David
Shame
So...not A-Rod then?
Troll rolls in.
Ortiz to address the media on NESN soon, according to SOSH'ers.
B.R. said...
but not Jeter, Posada, or Bernie.....
Before this report we thought Papi was clean too, just 97 names to go...
Some odds and ends:
I'm not really that surprised about Flo.
And 93 names left on this report, 9c (I think)...FTA:
Five others have been tied to positive tests from that year: Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Sammy Sosa, Jason Grimsley and David Segui.
Pedey, LOL:
"I don't really know too much about it," Dustin Pedroia said. "[Shoot], in 2003, I was in college hitting rockets there."
And I agree with Ish - this is bullshit, release the entire list!
An early and insurmountable Sox lead would go a long ways towards keeping Allan and Laura from driving off the road in a fit of rage.
LOL. If only it had been that simple. We were already in NY State when the game began. As you've probably seen by now, we didn't even know who won until almost 6:00 p.m. in Ontario!
Great day weatherwise it looks like, for Laura and Allan traveling back home.
Plus we hit a MASSIVE thunderstorm before we were even in Western Mass! Once it stopped, tho, the weather was good.
And to think...we only had Pettitte and Clemens juicing...they didn't plan everyday...
How the fuck does he know they ONLY had those two juicing? Does he think he has access to the entire truth? Does anyone in their right mind think we know every name of every player who was - and still may be - doping?
Fucking trolls. He tries to act like an upstanding guy at JoS but he's just another Yankee Moran.
Interesting to see B.R. showing his true colours outside of Joy of Sox.
Dear B.R.: Either be a MFY dick everywhere or live up to your own words about what a respectful fan you are.
"B.R. said...

Exactly. Why is he acting like we have all the facts, and somehow the Yankees look cleaner than the Sox?
Even when the full list is released (which obviously needs to happen immediately), we still won't have all the facts - only those people who tested positive at that time. Not those who were using but weren't active players at the time - not those who were using undetectable substances - not those who had false positives - just one list of names.
