Channeling My Inner RedSock

Maybe it's the prospect of meeting Allan for the first time later today, but reading Peter Abraham's Extra Bases stuff today is sending me into a minor rant.

Abraham seems like a smart guy, consistent in his approach. I have read a lot of his stuff on EB, including chats. He's sometimes criticized for taking a condescending tone toward fans who panic too easily, propose unreasonable trades, or speculate about next season before this one is over. I've been OK with that tone for the most part.

But yesterday he pissed me off. Before the game, he dedicated a post to Drew's coming out of the lineup, writing, "J.D. Drew has added to his MLB record of most times scratched from the lineup because of a hamstring strain."

I suppose he's trying to be a bit funny, and I suppose he's referring to the fact when Drew misses games, he often is scratched at the last moment. But as RS has pointed out, Drew's right up there in terms of games started for the year. Why should Abraham, whose calling card is skewering boneheaded fan notions, encourage the notion of Drew as fragile? Many the Sox fans in the Oakland stands last week were loudly calling him "Nancy". It's probably too late -- the label's not going away.

Having said all that, DJ is not in the lineup for today's game (12:35 PST / 3:35 EST).

RED SOX (57-44)
Scutaro SS
McDonald RF
Youkilis 1B
Ortiz DH
Martinez C
Beltre 3B
Hermida LF
Hall 2B
Patterson CF

Pitching: RHP Josh Beckett (1-1, 6.66)

ANGELS (52-51)
Aybar SS
Izturis DH
Callaspo 3B
Abreu RF
Matsui LF
Kendrick 2B
Napoli 1B
Wilson C
Willits CF

Pitching: RHP Joel Pineiro (10-7, 4.18)

In other news, Edes has a good article on Okajima's social and language issues, and Sons of Sam Horn a good discussion on the same.

I don't like that lineup. At least we'll have a solid bench???

Well, time to break the streak:

Last 8 - LL WW LL WW

Yeah, it kinda blows. Abraham says on EB that Francona only grudgingly let VMart play because we have an off day tomorrow. I guess Lowrie needs rest, too, as well as Cameron. Throw in Drew's hammy and this is the lineup you get.

Still, we beat two good pitchers the last two games. Going 6-4 on this road trip would be really nice. We also need a black-arts consultant to throw some major negative mojo on the freakin' Rays.

They did this already once this year, then came back down to earth.

They had that super hot start, then the sox overtook them at one point, so I'm not worried. Regression to the mean is a bitch.

Enjoy the SF/Fish game with A+L!

No bard or pap today.

Sweet.

Guess we'll have to put up a 10 spot whenever it becomes apparent that Beckett isn't going to throw a CG (which would be the easiest and least stressful option for today).

Zenslinger said...

Yarrrr Papi's called strike three looks close on GDGD.

tim said...

he bitched about it, looked close on tv too. good strike according to brooks baseball though.

piniero scratched, LAAAA going to do a committee sort of thing here i guess.

I can dig an OTT from Beckett. And with Sheilds starting, we might not need eight more of them to win.

tim said...

BELTre!!!!!

Zenslinger said...

Beltre...Beltre.

Where would our season be without him?

And I never thought I'd be saying that. If you asked me where he'd be at in Game 102 (?), I'd say .260/.325, still with good power, maybe 14 HR.

tim said...

HALL DONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tim said...

Beltre 5th in the AL at 4.2 WAR.

Zenslinger said...

Holy mackerel. 11 is a shit-ton of HRs for how much Hall has played. He's hardly perfect, but has certainly made up for his faults with some o' those sweet dongs.

Zenslinger said...

.745 OPS (before today) and a homer every 19 at bats or so is more than acceptable for a scrap heap kind of acquisition like Hall. Of course, it isn't the .899 OPS he put up in 2006, but it beats the shit out of the .640ish mark of his last three seasons.

And Sheilds at 47 pitches after the walk to Scutaro.

I don't feel bad for teams too often, and never when they swept us out of the playoffs in the previous year. But the Angels have kinda fallen down a hole here.

tim said...

locked and loaded!

here comes scoscia.

tim said...

fuck duh angels.

hall has been a pretty solid pickup, crushes dongs every now and then and its a respectable ops. definitely better than the type of shit we've seen in the infield for the past couple of years (i.e. lugo) and he can play every position out there!

tim said...

boooooooooooo. too many lobs.

Zenslinger said...

Fuck. That felt like a thrashing but it's only 2-0.

tim said...

Pricks.

Still feel sorry for them, zen? :>)

tim said...

what the fuck? i leave my desk for 5 min and come back to a tie game?

god dammit.

Zenslinger said...

Er. Nope.

Zenslinger said...

It's my fault.

Rob said...

What the devil is this? THIS SHOULD BE AN AUTOMATIC WIN!!!!111ONE1!

Zenslinger said...

No. Sympathy.

None.

Zenslinger said...

Jeremy Hermida: it is time for me to understand why you are playing on this team.

In other words:

Run(s).

tim said...

I question Hermida > Nava and Ramram/Okajima > Manuel.

While I realize the players on the team can't be sent down to Pawtucket, part of me wants to see them DFA'ed, never to be seen in red socks again.

Rob said...

Mike Scioscia is disappointed. That's his disappointed face.

tim said...

Well, looks like there's a storm where the satellite is located providing me with the feed for today's game.

GDGD it is.

Zenslinger said...

Return of the OTT.

Zenslinger said...

Damn your sweaty hide.

Zenslinger said...

When did LOB-fest become...pitching duel?

Zenslinger said...

C'mon, now, Susudio.

Rob said...

Did somebody call for an exterminator?

Rob said...

I'm jealous of Zen being able to go hang out with L and A. HI FROM THE EAST COAST.

Rob said...

Oooh bases loaded with nobody out!

Zenslinger said...

No more LOBosity.

Rob said...

GRAND SLAM MARCO SCUTARO.

Zenslinger said...

Thanks for showin' up, Ish.

Ah hah ha ha ha. And with that grand slam, I'm off to PacBell.

Rob said...

Have a good time!

Rob said...

Ugh. Golden Sombrero for Ortiz. :|

Rob said...

You guys like my new avatar? :P

Rob said...

I wish we scored more runs.

Rob said...

DAS WASSER.

tim said...

your avatar still no comprende, muchacho.

allan said...

I don't like missing all these wins, but if the Sox wanna go 10-0 while I'm away, I'll figure out a way to deal with it.

Crazy win by the Jints in 10.

tim said...

Just stay in cali! Sox are undefeated when you're there.

Zenslinger said...

For whatever reason, Ish, I can't see your avatar.

The Giants game was a blast and the company was great.
